NAIROBI—In a heartfelt message that resonated across Kenya’s political landscape, Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale has paid an emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a towering figure whose legacy of courage and compassion will forever shape the nation.

Odinga, affectionately known as “Baba,” passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80 in a hospital in Kerala, India, after suffering a heart attack during a morning walk. His death has plunged the country into mourning, with tributes pouring in from world leaders, fellow politicians, and ordinary Kenyans who remember him as a relentless champion of democracy and social justice.

Duale, a long-time political ally and mentee of Odinga, shared his personal reflections on social media, capturing the profound loss felt by those who knew him intimately. “Kenya has lost one of its greatest sons, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga,” Duale wrote. “Raila was a man whose courage, conviction and compassion defined generations. Through storms and triumphs alike, he carried the hope of a people and the vision of a nation yet to be.”

For Duale, the passing is deeply personal. The Cabinet Secretary credited Odinga with shaping his two-decade political career, recalling how the veteran leader inducted him as a member of the Dujis community in 2007—a pivotal moment that launched Duale’s path to public service. “Baba played a big role in my 20-year political journey; a father, teacher and mentor who believed in my potential when few did,” Duale added. “My family and I remain forever indebted to him for the guidance, faith and warmth he extended so generously.”

Duale’s tribute underscores the unique bond between the two men. Once a fiery National Assembly Majority Leader , Duale transitioned to the Kenya Kwanza administration after the 2022 elections, yet maintained deep respect for his mentor. Odinga’s influence extended beyond party lines, fostering unity in a often fractious political arena.

As Kenyans grapple with the void left by Odinga—a five-time presidential contender who served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013—Duale urged reflection on his enduring impact. “As we mourn his departure, we celebrate a legacy that transcends politics. A legacy of courage, principle and unwavering love for Kenya,” he stated. “May the memory of Hon. Raila continue to guide our nation toward unity and freedom. Rest well, Baba.”

The outpouring of grief has been widespread. President William Ruto hailed Odinga as a “veteran statesman” whose life embodied the fight for equality.Governors and Cabinet colleagues, including Lee Kinyanjui and John Mbadi, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Odinga’s role in constitutional reforms and anti-corruption battles.

Global figures, from African Union leaders to international diplomats, have also commemorated the “Enigma,” as Odinga was often called, for his pan-African vision.

Odinga’s death comes at a time when Kenya faces economic challenges and upcoming elections, leaving a leadership vacuum in opposition politics. Yet, as Duale’s words remind us, his spirit of resilience endures. Flags fly at half-mast nationwide, and memorial services are planned, ensuring Baba’s flame of hope burns on.
