The Chief Executive Officer of Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital, Mahat Sheikh Salah, joined the global health community in marking World Tuberculosis Day, observed annually on March 24, to raise awareness on the fight against Tuberculosis (TB) and to reaffirm commitment towards ending the disease.

“As we commemorate World Tuberculosis Day, we are reminded that TB remains a major public health challenge, particularly in our communities. This year’s observance calls on all of us to strengthen our efforts in prevention, early detection, and effective treatment of TB. Together, we can save lives and reduce the burden of this disease.”

CEO Mahat Salah emphasized the hospital’s commitment to aligning with guidelines from the World Health Organization in improving TB diagnosis, treatment, and patient care through modern, accessible, and efficient healthcare services.

Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital continues to enhance its TB control programs by expanding access to screening services, strengthening laboratory capacity, and ensuring patients receive timely and complete treatment.

The hospital also works closely with community health workers to promote awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals to seek medical attention early.

“TB is preventable and curable. We urge members of the public to get tested if they experience symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, night sweats, or weight loss. Early diagnosis and adherence to treatment are key to stopping the spread of TB in our communities.”
