MANDERA– In a powerful new book that refuses to shy away from uncomfortable truths, author Abdinoor Maalim (popularly known as Samir) has unveiled the complex soul of Mandera County through his debut work, “The Beautiful Ugly Village – Mandera”.

Set for release in April, the book offers a haunting yet deeply hopeful depiction of life in the arid frontier of northern Kenya. Under the scorching sun, amid shifting sands and fragile peace, the people of Mandera navigate a world shaped by inter-clan conflicts, generational mistrust and the relentless cruelty of drought. Maalim does not romanticize or sensationalize; instead, he presents an unflinching account drawn from lived experience.

The narrative lays bare the human cost of recurring violence. Innocent lives are lost to bullets fired over land and lineage, while cycles of revenge tear families apart. Mothers bear the silent grief of burying their sons and children grow up internalizing the sound of gunshots long before they learn to dream. The book confronts the harsh environmental realities too — livestock collapsing in the dust, wells drying into silence and entire communities forced to choose between hunger and dwindling hope.

Yet, “The Beautiful Ugly Village” is far from a tale of despair. In the same breath, it celebrates the extraordinary strength and humanity that define the region. Maalim highlights the deep loyalty that binds neighbors during crisis, the unity forged in hardship and the remarkable generosity extended even when families have almost nothing left. He captures moments of laughter that survive war, love that endures drought and a collective spirit that refuses to surrender to adversity.

Born and raised in Mandera County — specifically in Banisa — Maalim writes with raw authenticity. His childhood was marked by the echoes of clan conflict, the severity of drought and the quiet dignity with which families faced repeated tragedies. These experiences fuel his mission: to document realities often overlooked by the rest of the nation and to give voice to communities frequently buried under stereotypes and silence.

An educator, storyteller and committed advocate for youth empowerment, and community peace, Maalim’s writing is compassionate yet unapologetically honest. His work illuminates the richness of pastoral culture while exposing the profound human cost of conflict and marginalization. Through gripping storytelling, the book serves as both a mirror reflecting Mandera’s contradictions and a tribute to a place that is painfully ugly and breathtakingly beautiful at once.

More than a personal memoir or regional chronicle, “The Beautiful Ugly Village – Mandera” stands as a bold call for dialogue, understanding, and healing. It preserves fading memories, challenges national indifference, and reminds readers that even the most forgotten corners of Kenya overflow with stories that matter.
