NAIROBI— Wajir Town is poised for a major facelift following the Kenyan Government’s announcement of a landmark tender for upgrading approximately 65 kilometres of urban roads to bitumen standards.
Eldas Member of Parliament Adan Keynan has warmly welcomed the development, describing it as both plausible and transformative. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the veteran legislator lauded the initiative as a deliberate commitment to building a modern town capable of driving economic growth, social development, and improved quality of life for residents.

The project falls under the Development of Urban Roads in Five Counties in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas (ASALs) programme, implemented through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA). It is estimated to cost around USD 35 million and aims to upgrade 31 town roads, significantly enhancing connectivity within Wajir.
Keynan extended special thanks to President William Samoei Ruto for his “extraordinary and decisive” leadership in dismantling long-standing political, administrative, and socio-economic bottlenecks. He credited the President with ending decades of marginalisation and fast-tracking Northern Kenya’s development, positioning Wajir as an emerging city in the desert.
“This bold leadership not only redefines infrastructure delivery in Northern Kenya but also strongly reinforces our collective political alignment and support for the TUTAM agenda across the region,” the MP added.
The Eldas MP also commended KURA’s leadership for robust coordination and technical diligence and the OPEC Fund for providing critical development financing that enhanced the project’s viability and scale. He particularly appreciated the unity of purpose shown by Wajir County’s entire political leadership whose collaborative efforts helped bring the project to fruition.
“In a special way, my appreciation goes to the entire political leadership of Wajir County for unity of purpose, strategic alignment and sustained issue-oriented collaboration, which have collectively been instrumental in the successful breakthrough of this long-anticipated infrastructure undertaking aimed at making Wajir County a haven of landmark opportunities and limitless potential.” MP Keynan noted.
“Wajir is advancing with purpose, transforming with momentum and flourishing into a vibrant hub of growth and opportunity,” He concluded.
The development has been welcomed by residents who see it as a major boost to trade, investment and daily mobility in the region. As implementation gains pace, the project symbolises a new chapter of inclusion and prosperity for Northern Kenya.
