NAIROBI — Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale on Friday chaired a bilateral meeting with a United States delegation led by Chargé d’Affaires Ms. Susan Burns to assess progress and reinforce collaboration under the US Government–Government of Kenya (USG-GoK) health partnership framework.

The meeting, which builds directly on a consultative session held on 8 May 2026, forms part of a structured oversight mechanism designed to track implementation milestones and guarantee timely delivery of agreed actions. Both sides expressed strong confidence that the partnership will meet its targeted commencement date of 1 July 2026.

During the discussions, officials reviewed advancements across several critical areas, including the ongoing portfolio review process, development of the county transition roadmap, progress on the Strategic Objective Grant Agreement, and preparations for staffing the Programme Management Unit (PMU). Duale noted that the comprehensive Implementation Plan has already been submitted for joint review, while a detailed risk assessment exercise is scheduled to begin next week to identify and mitigate potential operational challenges.

“We reviewed progress made across key priority areas… and reiterated our commitment to ensuring all outstanding processes are concluded on schedule,” Duale said in a statement following the meeting.

The partnership focuses on advancing Kenya’s health priorities through targeted investments in primary healthcare, disease prevention and control, maternal and child health, health security, and overall health systems strengthening. Particular emphasis was placed on Ebola preparedness, with additional US support directed toward expanding isolation and treatment capacity, strengthening laboratory systems, maintaining adequate stocks of personal protective equipment (PPE), and enhancing training for healthcare workers.

The engagement underscored both governments’ shared vision of building a responsive, sustainable healthcare system aligned with national development goals and the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). By leveraging this strategic partnership, Kenya aims to deliver quality healthcare services to all citizens, especially in underserved counties.

Duale was joined by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Acting KNPHI Director Dr. Kamene Kimenye, and other senior Ministry of Health officials.

The US-Kenya health partnership represents a significant boost to Kenya’s ongoing health sector reforms. With the July 1 implementation date fast approaching, both delegations committed to accelerating remaining processes to ensure seamless rollout. Stakeholders view the framework as a cornerstone for long-term health security and resilience, particularly in an era of emerging infectious disease threats.
