DCI Neutralises Spring Valley Armed Robbery Suspect in Joska Shootout, Recovers Beretta Pistol

NAIROBI – In a swift and decisive operation, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have neutralised a key suspect linked to the brazen armed robbery at a popular restaurant in Spring Valley, Westlands, recovering a loaded Beretta pistol following a fierce shootout in Joska, Machakos County.

The operation, which unfolded on Monday, marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on violent criminal gangs terrorising Nairobi and its environs. The deceased suspect is believed to have been a central figure in a ruthless network responsible for a series of daylight and nighttime robberies across Nairobi, Kiambu, and Machakos counties.

Acting on credible intelligence, officers from DCI Headquarters, in collaboration with DCI Matungulu, raided a residential house in Joska Town where the suspect was hiding at his girlfriend’s residence. Upon arrival, the detectives identified themselves and ordered the occupants to open the door. Instead, the suspect responded by opening fire through a kitchen window, spraying bullets towards the officers.

In self-defence, the detectives returned fire, leading to a brief but intense exchange. After securing the premises, officers found the suspect fatally wounded inside the house. No officers were injured during the confrontation.

A search of the scene yielded critical evidence: a Beretta pistol loaded with a magazine containing four rounds of 9mm ammunition, additional live rounds, spent cartridges, and three mobile phones suspected to have been stolen during previous robberies. The firearm has been transferred to the National Police Service Forensic Laboratory (NPSFL) for ballistic analysis to determine its possible involvement in other violent crimes.

Preliminary investigations have strongly linked the suspect to the recent armed robbery along General Mathenge Road in Spring Valley. In that incident, armed thugs on motorcycles stormed a busy restaurant in broad daylight, terrorising patrons, brandishing weapons, and snatching mobile phones, cash, and other valuables before speeding off. The attack left diners traumatised and heightened public concerns over rising insecurity in upscale neighbourhoods.

The DCI has launched a manhunt for the suspect’s accomplices, who are still at large and believed to be armed and dangerous. Authorities are appealing to members of the public with any information to come forward.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations reiterated its unwavering commitment to dismantling organised criminal networks. “We remain resolute in our mission to restore safety and ensure that all perpetrators of violent crimes face the full force of the law,” the DCI said.

This latest operation underscores the enhanced inter-agency cooperation and intelligence-driven approach adopted by Kenyan security forces in tackling armed robbery syndicates. Residents in affected areas have welcomed the development, though many continue to call for sustained patrols and faster response times to such incidents.
