NAIROBI— A new TIFA Research survey has ranked Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale as the most influential political figure among Kenya’s Somali community, with 44% of Somali respondents who recognise a community leader identifying him as the person they look to for political direction and guidance.
The findings form part of TIFA’s first national survey of 2026, conducted through face-to-face interviews with 2,013 randomly selected adults across all 47 counties between 2 and 11 May. The survey measure the degree of consensus within major ethnic groups on their most popular political figureheads.
The poll notes that overall, only about half of Kenyans (49%) acknowledge that their ethnic community has a single leader they turn to for political guidance. Among the Somali community, that recognition has risen noticeably, from 39% in November 2025 to 51% in the May 2026 survey.
Analysts say the figures highlight Duale’s continued standing in North Eastern Kenya and the wider Somali community in the lead-up to the 2027 general election. As a senior figure in the Kenya Kwanza administration and a long-time representative of the region, the Health Cabinet Secretary remains a key voice on matters affecting the community.
