NAIROBI— The Chairperson of the Eastleigh Business Community, Haji Yare, has recounted a startling encounter involving Chief Justice Martha Koome at one of Nairobi’s upscale five-star hotels, highlighting concerns over public etiquette and security protocols in premium establishments.
According to Haji Yare, the incident occurred recently while he was dining with his wife at the hotel. Seated nearby was Chief Justice Koome, who was also enjoying a quiet dinner. Moments later, a group of young Somali men entered the premises without making any purchases and immediately began recording videos and taking photographs as they moved around the venue.
The behaviour quickly drew the attention of Koome’s security detail, who became visibly alarmed and maintained a close watch on the group, uncertain of their intentions. The Chief Justice herself appeared surprised by the unexpected intrusion. Hotel security eventually intervened, escorting the youths out of the premises to restore calm.
Speaking on the matter, Haji Yare urged young Somali youth to exercise caution and observe proper decorum when visiting high-end hotels. “It is inappropriate and against basic etiquette to walk around filming without first seeking permission from management,” he advised.
The episode has sparked discussions on balancing openness in public spaces with respect for privacy and security, particularly in venues frequented by high-profile figures.
