NAIROBI– The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has formally charged former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju with giving false information to a public officer, an offence that prosecutors say undermines public trust in law enforcement.
Tuju was arraigned yesterday before Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo at the Kibera Law Courts. He faced one count of providing false information contrary to Section 129(a) of the Penal Code. The prosecution alleged that on March 21, 2026, at the Entim Sidai Spa Wellness Sanctuary in Lang’ata Sub-County, Tuju knowingly misled Chief Inspector Purity Kobia, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Karen Police Station.
According to court papers, Tuju reported that he had been trailed by unknown assailants and subsequently abducted. Prosecutors contend these claims were false and were made with the intention of prompting official police action. The alleged misleading report is said to have wasted police resources and eroded confidence in the criminal justice system.
When the charge was read to him, Tuju pleaded not guilty. The matter is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Maryanne Mwangi and Principal Prosecution Counsel Michael Mutune.
Defence counsel requested bond, and the court released Tuju on a personal bond of KSh 100,000. The case has been scheduled for mention on April 15, 2026, for further directions.
The development comes weeks after Tuju’s reported disappearance earlier this year, which had sparked public concern and calls for accountability from security agencies. Prosecutors maintain that the information Tuju provided to police was fabricated.
The case continues to draw attention as it touches on the integrity of reports made to law enforcement and the consequences of false alarms in a system already strained by serious crime.
