Former Ijara Member of Parliament Sophia Abdi Noor has been formally endorsed as the preferred flag-bearer of the Abdalle’s Hassan Adan Community for the 2027 general election. The decision followed a three-day consultative meeting held in Ijara, where residents, elders, religious leaders, women, youth and professionals deliberated on the community’s preferred candidate for the parliamentary seat.

At the conclusion of the talks on Monday, Selection Committee Chairman presented Mrs. Sophia Abdi Noor with a certificate of endorsement. “Sophia Abdi Noor has been endorsed as the flag-bearer of the community and I hereby issue the certificate of endorsement,” the Chairman declared.

Sophia Abdi Noor, who represented Ijara Constituency from 2017 to 2022, made history as the first woman from North Eastern Kenya to be elected to the National Assembly.

Speaking after receiving the endorsement, she expressed deep gratitude to all who participated in the process. “I want to thank each and every one of you — from the selection committee to the opinion and religious leaders, elders, professionals and youth — for their time and the trust you have placed in my leadership. I will not take it for granted,” she said.

A member of the selection committee, speaking on behalf of the group, explained the rationale behind the choice. “After thorough consultations and careful consideration of leadership track records, community service and vision for Ijara, the committee unanimously recommended Sophia Abdi Noor. Her experience, accessibility and commitment to inclusive development make her the strongest candidate to advance our shared interests,” the committee representative stated.

Mrs.Noor outlined key priorities she intends to pursue if elected. These include supporting local businesses, creating youth employment and boosting agriculture; improving school infrastructure and ensuring transparent bursary management; upgrading dispensaries and expanding access to affordable health insurance; and advocating for better roads, clean water and reliable electricity.

She also pledged to establish functional service centres in every ward, hold quarterly public forums, and publish annual audit reports on constituency spending and projects, with particular emphasis on empowering women and youth.

Local residents welcomed the endorsement. A youth representative said: “Madam Sophia has always listened to young people. Her past work and clear plans for jobs and skills give us hope that the next generation will not be left behind.”

Siman Abdirahman from Ijara added: “As mothers and community builders, we support her fully. She understands the challenges we face and has consistently fought for education, health and the dignity of women and girls.”

The endorsement marks a significant early step in the race for the Ijara parliamentary seat ahead of the 2027 elections.
