NAIROBI – Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Monday announced that Kenya is advancing three flagship health infrastructure projects with financing and technical support from the African Development Bank (AfDB).
In a post on X, CS Duale revealed he hosted an AfDB delegation led by Division Manager for Human Capital, Youth and Skills Development, Ms. Hendrina Doroba, to finalize support for the initiatives, which are aligned with President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the push for Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The two primary projects under discussion are the South Rift Level 6 Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kericho County – designed as a specialized trauma centre to handle the rising cases of road traffic accidents along major highways – and a planned Level 6 Centre of Excellence in Bungoma County that will focus on comprehensive sickle cell disease management and establish a regional blood transfusion service.
The meeting also reviewed progress on the East Africa Kidney Institute (EAKI), a regional facility intended to expand access to advanced kidney care, train specialist health professionals, and drastically reduce the need for costly medical referrals abroad.

“These initiatives will decentralise specialised healthcare, improve access for all Kenyans and contribute to economic and social development,” CS Duale stated, emphasising that the projects mark a significant stride toward achieving UHC.
The Kenyan delegation included Public Health Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director of Curative and Nursing Services Dr. Andrew Toro, and Head of Infrastructure, Projects and Grants Dr. Hezron Omollo.
The AfDB-funded facilities are expected to enhance tertiary care capacity in underserved regions and strengthen Kenya’s position as a hub for medical training and specialised treatment in East Africa.
