President William Ruto has hailed Kulan Post founding editor Abdikadir Hassan Ukash, describing his innovative digital journalism as “a stroke of genius” in bridging the information gap in Northern Kenya.
Speaking during a roundtable media engagement in at Wajir State Lodge on 1st June 2026, President Ruto commended Ukash for creating a responsive, community-centred platform that delivers timely news and amplifies marginalised voices through responsible digital media.
Wajir hosted the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations, the first held in Nothern Kenya since independence.
“You run a digital media house. It’s quite a stroke of genius to have people like yourself looking at new spaces for opportunity,” the President told Ukash. “It’s not the traditional newspaper… and I think I want to commend you on that.”
He added that Ukash exemplifies the responsible use of media to create and disseminate vital public information.

Ukash’s Profile and Impact
Abdikadir Hassan Ukash is a veteran broadcaster, former Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) journalist, and seasoned communications strategist.
He founded Kulan Post to address the historical underrepresentation of Northern Kenya in national media. The platform has grown into a multi-award-winning outlet delivering news in Somali, Swahili, and English, with in-depth coverage of governance, devolution, security, development, and humanitarian issues aacross Nothern Kenya counties of Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Tana River and Marsabit.
Ukash also chairs the Northern Kenya Media Practitioners (NKMP), a non-partisan body advancing ethical journalism, press freedom, and professional collaboration in the region.

Thanking the President for the recognition, Ukash reaffirmed Kulan Post’s commitment to accountability, citizen participation, and inclusive development.
“We thank the President for recognising the growing role of regional media in promoting accountability, citizen participation, and inclusive development,” he said.
Ukash pledged that locally driven media will continue ensuring Northern Kenya’s stories receive sustained national and international attention.
