NAIROBI – President William Ruto has conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel on 54 distinguished advocates, including National Intelligence Service Director-General Noordin Haji and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
The conferment was announced in a Kenya Gazette Notice dated December 10, 2025, with the President exercising powers under Section 17(1) of the Advocates Act to honour advocates for exemplary service to the nation’s legal profession and development.
Among the new Senior Counsel are former IEBC Chairman Ahmednasir Issack Hassan, former Makueni Governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana, renowned legal scholar Prof Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, ex-LSK President Nelson Havi, and current LSK President Eric Theuri.
Other notable recipients include Prof Kariuki Muigua, James Ochieng’ Oduol, Jane Njeri Onyango, Christine Anyango Agimba, Anastacia Kioko Mululu, Hillary Chacha Odera, Njeri Caroline Ndegwa Kariuki, Mercy Wangari Buku, Isaac Edwin Nicholas Okero, and Elisha Zebedee Ongoya.
The rigorous selection process, overseen by a special committee, evaluates candidates on professional competence, integrity, contributions to legal scholarship, advocacy in superior courts, mentorship, and service to the Law Society of Kenya and the wider community.
In the Gazette Notice, President Ruto declared that the advocates “shall have all the precedence and privileges of the rank and dignity of Senior Counsel,” effective immediately.
The conferment marks the latest round of elevations since 2022 and is seen as recognition of the recipients’ significant role in shaping Kenya’s jurisprudence and public service.
