NAIROBI— Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Friday presided over a colourful reception ceremony to welcome Somali FIFA referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, whose dream of officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was suddenly cut short last month.
The high-profile event, held at the BBS Mall in Eastleigh — recognised as the largest shopping complex in East and Central Africa — brought together Kenyan leaders, the Somali diaspora, and football enthusiasts to honour Artan’s historic achievement. The referee had made history as the first Somali official selected among 52 match officials for the 2026 World Cup, representing a major milestone for Somali football.
Speaking during the ceremony, CS Aden Duale emphasised regional solidarity and resilience. “In a display of regional solidarity and support, I presided over this reception to welcome referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan,” Duale said. He described the gathering as both a celebration of Artan’s accomplishment and a powerful statement against setbacks.
Duale urged young people across East Africa not to be discouraged by obstacles. “It is important to continue striving for excellence despite unexpected challenges,” he added, stressing the values of perseverance and determination.
The Cabinet Secretary also highlighted the deliberate efforts by President William Ruto’s administration to develop sports infrastructure and nurture talent. He noted that the Fifth Administration has allocated KSh 26.4 billion to complete 39 stadiums across the country. This includes the newly constructed, state-of-the-art 60,000-capacity Talanta Stadium, which is set to be commissioned soon.
“These investments are geared towards uplifting talent and successfully hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania under the ‘Pamoja Bid’,” Duale said.

The event drew several prominent guests, including Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya Jabril Abdulle, Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed, Dadaab MP Farrah Maalim, Kamukunji MP Yussuf Hassan, and BBS Mall Chairman Abdiweli Maalim, who hosted the ceremony.
Attendees described the reception as a demonstration of cross-border unity and support for African talent on the global stage. Despite the disappointment of his World Cup opportunity being halted, Omar Artan received overwhelming encouragement from both Kenyan and Somali communities.
The colourful gathering emphasized East Africa’s shared commitment to sports development and the empowerment of young athletes, reinforcing the region’s readiness to shine on the continental and international stage.
