NAIROBI – Leaders of the Northeastern Parliamentary Group (NEPG), chaired by Eldas MP Adan Keynan, held high-level talks with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday evening at his official residence in Karen.
In a statement released shortly after the meeting, Chairperson Adan Keynan described the engagement as, “candid and constructive”centred on the North Eastern region’s urgent development and humanitarian priorities. “Together with colleague leaders from the North Eastern Parliamentary Group (NEPG), we held a candid and constructive engagement this evening with the Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, at his official Karen residence,” he said.
The discussions reviewed the effectiveness of current drought mitigation programmes and examined progress on critical infrastructure initiatives, including roads, housing and markets. Lawmakers also assessed the wider socio-economic realities confronting residents of the region.
Particular emphasis was placed on the escalating drought crisis affecting pastoralist counties. The NEPG stressed that government intervention must be anticipatory, data-driven and fully proportionate to the scale of the emergency, backed by stronger fiscal mechanisms to accelerate coordinated relief and recovery operations.

Beyond immediate relief, the leaders deliberated on priority projects under the National Infrastructure Fund. They called for infrastructure expansion to be deliberately aligned with long-term drought resilience through targeted investments in water systems, climate-proof roads, livestock value chains, pasture development and early warning mechanisms.
Keynan concluded: “Our overarching objective remains to cushion our communities against recurrent shocks while safeguarding livelihoods, strengthening economic stability and restoring the dignity of our region.”
The Wednesday meeting underscores deepening collaboration between regional legislators and national leadership to confront climate challenges and drive sustainable growth across North Eastern Kenya.
