Las—Anod,Somalia — Somalia’s federal government marked a historic milestone on January 17, 2026, with the inauguration of the new North Eastern State in Las Anod, its capital. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, attending the ceremony alongside Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, underscored national sovereignty and unity during the event—the first presidential visit to the city in over four decades.
The inauguration formally elevated the former SSC-Khatumo administration, led by newly sworn-in President Abdulqadir Ahmed Aw Ali (Firdhiye), to full federal member state status, following its integration into Somalia’s framework in 2025 after years of conflict and Somaliland’s withdrawal from the area in 2023.
Speeches emphasized territorial integrity amid recent geopolitical shifts, particularly Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland’s independence on December 26, 2025—the first by any nation. Former Kenyan Senator Billow Kerrow, present at the event on his first visit to Las Anod, described the rhetoric as firmly rejecting any external alliances threatening Somalia’s borders.
Kerrow highlighted Mohamud’s criticism of Somaliland’s outreach to Israeli leaders, Barre’s warning of “existential threats” from divisive actions, and Firdhiye’s blunt pledge that no territory would be ceded.
Analysts view the timing as Mogadishu’s strategic consolidation of federal authority in the north, countering Hargeisa’s diplomatic gains while navigating regional sensitivities over the Gaza conflict.
