WAJIR— Construction of the long-awaited Wajir Stadium is set to commence immediately following a high-level meeting between Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and Principal Secretary for Defence Patrick Mariru at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
The 10,000-seater modern stadium, a joint initiative between the national government and Wajir County Government, will be implemented by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). The project has now completed its design phase and is on track for completion by June 1, 2026, in time for national Madaraka Day celebrations.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi expressed satisfaction with the progress, highlighting the collaborative spirit driving the project. “This milestone underscores my administration’s commitment to developing Wajir’s infrastructure,” he said. “The stadium will host sporting events and other activities, boosting community engagement and development. I appreciate the Department of Defence’s expertise and support.”

Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru confirmed that work would start without delay. “This morning at Defence Headquarters, I hosted Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and his team for discussions on the proposed construction of the Wajir Stadium,” Mariru stated. “The stadium will be implemented by the Ministry of Defence through KDF. Work starts immediately.”
The facility will feature state-of-the-art amenities, including changing rooms, VIP lounges, an eight-lane running track, a standard football pitch, spectator ablution blocks, equipment stores, a borehole for water supply, ample parking, and a secure perimeter wall.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides, including Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L) Major General Edward Rugendo, Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Colonel Gabriel Kibuchi, and other officers from the Ministry of Defence and Wajir County.
