WAJIR— Construction of the long-awaited Wajir Stadium is set to commence immediately following a high-level meeting between Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and Principal Secretary for Defence Patrick Mariru at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.

The 10,000-seater modern stadium, a joint initiative between the national government and Wajir County Government, will be implemented by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). The project has now completed its design phase and is on track for completion by June 1, 2026, in time for national Madaraka Day celebrations.

Governor Ahmed Abdullahi expressed satisfaction with the progress, highlighting the collaborative spirit driving the project. “This milestone underscores my administration’s commitment to developing Wajir’s infrastructure,” he said. “The stadium will host sporting events and other activities, boosting community engagement and development. I appreciate the Department of Defence’s expertise and support.”

Local leaders and residents have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a significant step toward improved infrastructure in Wajir County.

With construction now greenlit, the project marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between the national government and devolved units to deliver transformative development across Kenya.
