New York– The Federal Republic of Somalia officially assumed the monthly rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council today, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for the Horn of Africa nation.

Somalia, serving as a non-permanent member for the 2025-2026 term, took over from Slovenia, which held the presidency in December 2025.

The presidency rotates alphabetically among the Council’s 15 members—five permanent and ten non-permanent—under established rules.

Led by Permanent Representative Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, Somalia will chair all Council meetings, set the agenda, and facilitate discussions on global peace and security throughout January.

Expected priorities include African security challenges, counterterrorism, peacekeeping operations, rule of law, and humanitarian issues affecting conflict zones.

This role underscores Somalia’s growing international engagement amid ongoing domestic stabilization efforts. Analysts note it provides a platform to amplify Horn of Africa perspectives on regional stability and climate-related security threats.

The United Kingdom will assume the presidency in February 2026.
