GARISSA — East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Falhada Dekow has condemned a “violent” incident that disrupted a youth empowerment tournament in Garissa, accusing nominated MP Umi Harun of mobilizing armed goons to intimidate her and derail the event.

The disturbance occurred on Friday, March 20, at Kunaso ground during the final of the Eid Cup tournament. Organized by the Falde Foundation, the initiative aimed to empower young people through sports, nurture talent, foster unity and offer a constructive platform for community youth.

In a statement, MP Dekow described the episode as “unfortunate and disturbing,” alleging that Umi Harun orchestrated the attack with individuals armed with knives, intent on targeting her and causing chaos. “It is deeply disappointing and unacceptable that an initiative designed to uplift and inspire the youth can be met with intimidation, threats, and attempts to cause chaos,” she said.

Dekow emphasized the Falde Foundation’s longstanding commitment to youth development via sports, leadership training and community programs. “Our young generation deserves opportunities, mentorship, and encouragement—not fear, violence, or political interference,” she asserted.

The MP confirmed she has formally reported the matter to Garissa Police Station, calling for a thorough investigation and accountability. She further stated on record: “If anything happens to me, Umi Harun should be held responsible.”

Despite the threats, Dekow vowed to remain undeterred in her mission. “No amount of threats or disruption will stop us from standing for what is right,” she declared, urging the community to reject violence and political sabotage in favor of peace, unity, and development.

The incident highlights rising tensions in Garissa’s political landscape, where youth-focused initiatives have become flashpoints. Authorities are yet to comment on the police report or any arrests.

Local leaders and residents have called for calm as investigations proceed, stressing the need to protect community programs that benefit the next generation.
